E. Coles: English Dictionary, 1677
Coles a schoolteacher who, despite the short life, published a number of teaching texts slanted toward the 'beginner'. His 'Hard-Word Dictionary', first published in 1676, was quite influential, stayed in print through many editions, and "remained the basis of Latin teaching for the next century." Coles 'Dictionary' runs to around 25,000 words, "more than in the fourth edition of Phillips, which appeared in 1678. Starnes and Noyes suggest Coles made a number of important advances in the techniques of Dictionary making. He retains & augments list of 'old words,' . although he removes what he sees as the foolish inclusions of others, . He defines many dialect terms . he expands the 'encyclopedic' aspects of the dictionary by including the names of market towns . and the cities and towns of Europe, he also extends the treatment of proper names and offers the stories that accompany those of classical figures. . it is in his expansion of the bases of his word list that he is most innovative. . He is also the first mainstream lexicographer to acknowledge the importance of slang, ." [Green. CHASING THE SUN, pp 201 - 203.].
